What changes the answer?
- If the extra item costs less than the shipping charge and reaches the threshold, adding it can reduce the total.
- If sales tax applies, include tax on the extra item. A retailer may use different tax or eligibility rules.
- If you already planned to buy the item later, the higher total now could still be worthwhile to you. The calculator compares this checkout, not the item’s usefulness.
Simple check: Compare what you would pay today with and without the extra item. Ignore the word “free” until you see both totals.
